Job Summary:
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Shop Supervisor to oversee the operations of our shop within the oil & gas construction service industry located in the Bakken area. Our shop department is a crucial part that aids in our light & heavy civil dirt work, trucking, and roustabout departments amongst several others. Our company operates a diverse fleet, including side dump trucks, winch trucks, scrapers, dozers, skid steers, and a variety of heavy equipment. The Shop Supervisor will be responsible for managing all aspects of the shop, from equipment maintenance to inventory control, ensuring the efficient functioning of our diverse fleet. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of various construction equipment, strong leadership, technical expertise, and organizational skills.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
As the Shop Supervisor, you will lead and supervise a team of mechanics and shop hands. Your duties will include assigning tasks, providing guidance, monitoring performance, and ensuring compliance as well as DOT compliance, with safety regulations and quality standards. You will also conduct performance evaluations, offer feedback, and provide training and development opportunities to ensure your team’s growth and competency.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage day-to-day operations of the shop, including scheduling, workflow coordination, and resource allocation.
- Ensure all equipment, such as side dump trucks, winch trucks, scrapers, dozers, and skid steers, are properly maintained and serviced to support shop operations.
- Coordinate with vendors and suppliers to procure parts, materials, and supplies for the fleet.
- Oversee inventory management, track stock levels, conduct inventory audits, and reorder as necessary.
- Supervise and coordinate maintenance and repair activities, ensuring timely completion and high-quality workmanship.
- Conduct regular inspections of shop facilities and equipment to identify maintenance needs and safety hazards.
- Develop and implement safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment for all employees.
- Communicate effectively with internal departments, customers, and vendors to resolve issues and coordinate activities related to shop operations.
- Prepare and maintain records, reports, and documentation, including work orders, maintenance logs, and safety records.
- Provide leadership and guidance to shop personnel, fostering a culture of teamwork, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Strong leadership and supervisory skills with the ability to effectively lead and motivate a team of mechanics and technicians.
- Extensive knowledge of heavy equipment used in oil & gas construction, including side dump trucks, winch trucks, scrapers, dozers, and skid steers.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in equipment maintenance, repair procedures, and inventory management for a diverse fleet.
- Familiarity with safety regulations and procedures related to the operation, maintenance, and repair of construction equipment.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with team members, customers, and vendors.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with the capacity to analyze complex issues and develop effective solutions.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and technical skills, with the ability to troubleshoot and diagnose a wide range of equipment problems.
Education Requirements:
- Basic: High school diploma or equivalent.
- Preferred: Associate’s degree or technical certification in mechanical engineering, automotive technology, or a related field.
- Preferred: Relevant experience in shop management or equipment maintenance, particularly within the oil & gas construction industry.
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job (but are not limited to). The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, or crouch for extended periods of time, unassisted. The incumbent must wear a respirator when required. Manual and finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination sufficient to operate industrial machinery is required. This job also requires full range of body motion to include handling and lifting. The incumbent must repeatedly lift and/or move up to 65 (SIXTY-FIVE) pounds unassisted. Visual acuity, hearing, speaking, reading, and writing must be adequate to perform all required tasks in a safe manner.
Work Environment:
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Work is usually done outdoors and sometimes at a client facility or job site and is frequently performed in inclement and/or extreme weather conditions. The incumbent is exposed to electricity, moving mechanical parts, vehicles, equipment, and hazardous materials. This position regularly requires long work hours and frequent weekend work.
